Trends can be technology related as well as business ones. I feel that with declining ARPU's and increasing churn, business trends like mantra of experience management and relationship management will help become a differentiator in marketplace. Some recent trends which the CSP's must be aware of are cloud services, new business models, LTE and next generation networks.
• Cloud - Telco's can act both as a user and as a provider on cloud. For instance, the mobile app developers find cloud to be a safe place with no battery, processing constraints. Encompassing IaaS, Pay as you go and sharing of resources will help reduce opex.
• New Business Models - I feel that the focus of new business models should be on experience management. Loyalty services, user preferences, and customized offerings are some key things which a customer looks for. Analytics can help study transactional behavioral tendency which can transform in to personalized offerings for user.
Above are some of the myriad trends (read opportunities) that are knocking the doors of Telco's today. I would recommend analyzing the factors that the Telco faces and then decide on the opportunity one must cash in. These factors may range from demographics to policies & regulations to current and future investment analysis.
Most famous and common example of a company failing to foresee trends is Nokia. Nokia failed to realize the market shift from basic phones to smart phones, and hence, was left behind competition. In a dynamic industry like telecommunications, it becomes extremely critical for the CSP's to continuously monitor the trends.
