Tips to Increase Internet Connection Speed

How to Speed Up My Internet Connection thumbnail
Has your Internet connection speed slowed down? Are you not getting the full speed your paying for? In a few easy steps, you can increase the speed of your Internet connection.

Instructions

    • 1
Find out from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) what Internet connection speed you're paying for. Make sure the speed you pay for is the speed programmed in the ISP network.
    • 2
Test your Internet connection speed. You can do this by navigating to a speed test websites, such as Speakeasy (Speakeasy.net/speedtest) or Speedtest.net. Record your results.
    • 3
Compare the speeds from Step 1 and Step 2. If you're getting the speed that you're paying for, go no further. If not, go to the next step.
    • 4
Disable Web brower add-ons that can slow down your Internet connection speed. Check to see if you have multiple Web browser add-ons operating with your browser. For example, if your browser is Internet Explorer, go to "Tools," select "Manage Add-ons," and look at what Add-ons are enabled. Disable the add-ons that you don't want to use.
    • 5
Run anti-virus, adware, spyware, and malware scans. Viruses and other malware could negatively affect your Internet connection speed.
    • 6
Run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter from your "System Tools" menu.
    • 7
Download TCP Optimizer software to optimize your computer's MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) values, RWIN (Receive Window) values and broadband related registry keys. SG TCP Optimizer (download.cnet.com/SG-TCP-Optimizer/3000-2155_4-10415840.html) is a free TCP Optimizer.
    • 8
Retest your Internet connection speed by navigating to a speed test website, such as Speakeasy (Speakeasy.net/speedtest) or Speedtest.net. Record and compare these results with the previous results.

Tips & Warnings

Depending on what ISP you are using, your Internet connection speed can vary. For example, DSL speeds can be negatively affected by distance and the quality of your phone line. Cable speeds can be negatively affected by the quality of the coaxial cable and the number of users sharing the Internet connection with you. In FTTC (Fiber To The Curb) & FTTP (Fiber To The Premise) applications, the quality of the coax/CAT5 network between your computer and the ISP's fiber network, could affect connection speeds.

Make sure you understand how TCP Optimizer software interacts with your computer.

Customer Review
The LG Xpression is about halfway between a smartphone and a dumbphone, and is made for people who want to send text messages but not to use a data plan. It runs a few apps and looks android-ish (but is not android), has a sliding keyboard, a touchscreen, and is pretty good. I got this for my daughter, who is a serious texter but doesn't need a data plan, and so far she seems pretty happy.

(Update: After several weeks, my daughter asked me to drop this to three stars because of some design flaws -- see below).

What I like:

- For the price (currently free with plan), it's pretty good. It plays music, takes pictures, sends SMS and MMS messages, and can run a few apps.

- Texting is pretty good. It has a slider keyboard, and arranges text exchanges into conversations by sender.

- Connecting to a computer is well designed. When you connect to a PC through the micro-USB charging port, you get options to mount the phone as an external storage device (requires memory card), to sync music, or to use the PC for an internet connection. I haven't finished testing that last option, but really appreciate it --assuming it works, it means that we can get to the AT&T app store without buying a data plan.

- For a free phone, the operating system isn't bad. You can customize the home screen with "widgets" like android, so you have little windows on the home screen from different apps.

- It does have a basic web browser and some social media apps for things like facebook, and is eligible for AT&T's discount data plan, so if you want to buy data, it's functional. (At that point, though, I might look at the basic android phones -- their data plan is a little more expensive, but they're a lot more functional).

Cell Phones for Every Kind of User

Man in a suit checking his cell phone
The number of mobile phones available, and their capabilities, continues to grow. With so many options to choose from, you might find yourself wondering whatcell phone will best fit you. Probably the best way to decide on cell phones is to determine what kind of aphone user you are and what types of features you like to use or might use in the future. Here is a guide to choosing a cell phone according to your user type.

Cell Phones by User:

  1. PDA users: Users of PDA cell phones tend to use their phones to organize appointments, contacts and even do work away from the office. These cell phones typically include advanced Internet access and messaging options as well. If you're interested in transferring your day planner into electronic form, PDA cell phones may be for you.
  2. Text and messaging users: Most cell phones can send and receive texts and instant messages, but users who are serious about messaging may want a full QWERTY keyboard to make typing easier.Messaging phones tend to have other advanced controls for organizing and sending text, picture and video messages.
  3. Voice only users: Some users don't want all the bells and whistles. They just want a convenient, compact cell phone with good sound quality and long battery life. You can save lots of money every month by not having extras, such as texting or data plans. But make sure your cell phone is text capable. You never know when you might catch the bug!
  4. Music and video phone users: Music phones usually include a lot of memory to hold several hours of music and video. If you like to listen to music with your phone, find one with an easy user-interface and long battery life. Some decent headphones will complete your portable listening experience.
  5. Smartphone users: Available features vary between smartphones, but these phones basically act like portable computers. You can download programs, games, music and more to your cell phone over your wireless network and even connect to Wi-Fi hotspots. A large touch screen gives you great control to move between programs as well. Your smartphone may require a data plan to download apps and access the Web, though.

Customer Reviews
Needed a phone to replace our old GE. Does what it is supposed to do. The speaker phone works great and since my husband isn't the best when it comes to hearing, he hasn't complained yet when it rings.Easy to read.Has a lot of features. The answering machine is very clear and easy to understand. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend for someone who isn't into all the high tech.

I received this phone about 4 days ago and set them up yesterday...they are very nice for the price of 36.97 and they are replacing a phone that refused to hold a charge...didn't need the second phone but put it in the bedroom just for easy answering of all callers. The ring I chose is easy on the ears and both phones are easy to shut off...I am completely satisfied with the style and ease of use. Some reviews stated that the speaker was not clear I have not noted that...for heaven sake it is a phone not a stereo system that all the notes need to be true on....people need to rate the important things with the products and consider what your expectations are and what the products abilities are. I would buy this product again and suggest it to others!

How to Find Your Bluetooth Passkey

Bluetooth is a quick and easy way to wirelessly connect two devices. To pair two Bluetooth-compatible devices, you must have the pairing code, or passkey, for each device. Finding the passkey for your device takes only a few seconds.

Instructions

    • 1
Check your device for a sticker with the passkey printed on it. Typically headsets and car stereos have the passkey printed on a small sticker attached at the rear of the device.
    • 2
Look in your device's instruction book to see if the passkey is written inside. Each device has a unique passkey, so the passkey typically is printed on a sticker or inserted into the instruction book.
    • 3
Check the Bluetooth menu for your device. Cell phones and computers often have their passkeys within the Bluetooth menu. Look for the "Pairing Code" or "Passkey" option. Some laptop computers generate a random code each time you need it, so you may have an option for this task.
    • 4
Check online forums for your particular device to see whether someone has posted the passkey. A search for your device and the words "pairing code" might bring up information regarding the code or where you might find it.
    • 5
Call customer service for your device if you can't find the passkey. Customer service should be able to either tell you the passkey for your device or give you detailed instructions on how to find it.
