Tips to Increase Internet Connection Speed

How to Speed Up My Internet Connection thumbnail
Has your Internet connection speed slowed down? Are you not getting the full speed your paying for? In a few easy steps, you can increase the speed of your Internet connection.

Instructions

    • 1
Find out from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) what Internet connection speed you're paying for. Make sure the speed you pay for is the speed programmed in the ISP network.
    • 2
Test your Internet connection speed. You can do this by navigating to a speed test websites, such as Speakeasy (Speakeasy.net/speedtest) or Speedtest.net. Record your results.
    • 3
Compare the speeds from Step 1 and Step 2. If you're getting the speed that you're paying for, go no further. If not, go to the next step.
    • 4
Disable Web brower add-ons that can slow down your Internet connection speed. Check to see if you have multiple Web browser add-ons operating with your browser. For example, if your browser is Internet Explorer, go to "Tools," select "Manage Add-ons," and look at what Add-ons are enabled. Disable the add-ons that you don't want to use.
    • 5
Run anti-virus, adware, spyware, and malware scans. Viruses and other malware could negatively affect your Internet connection speed.
    • 6
Run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter from your "System Tools" menu.
    • 7
Download TCP Optimizer software to optimize your computer's MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) values, RWIN (Receive Window) values and broadband related registry keys. SG TCP Optimizer (download.cnet.com/SG-TCP-Optimizer/3000-2155_4-10415840.html) is a free TCP Optimizer.
    • 8
Retest your Internet connection speed by navigating to a speed test website, such as Speakeasy (Speakeasy.net/speedtest) or Speedtest.net. Record and compare these results with the previous results.

Tips & Warnings

Depending on what ISP you are using, your Internet connection speed can vary. For example, DSL speeds can be negatively affected by distance and the quality of your phone line. Cable speeds can be negatively affected by the quality of the coaxial cable and the number of users sharing the Internet connection with you. In FTTC (Fiber To The Curb) & FTTP (Fiber To The Premise) applications, the quality of the coax/CAT5 network between your computer and the ISP's fiber network, could affect connection speeds.

Make sure you understand how TCP Optimizer software interacts with your computer.

Customer Review
The LG Xpression is about halfway between a smartphone and a dumbphone, and is made for people who want to send text messages but not to use a data plan. It runs a few apps and looks android-ish (but is not android), has a sliding keyboard, a touchscreen, and is pretty good. I got this for my daughter, who is a serious texter but doesn't need a data plan, and so far she seems pretty happy.

(Update: After several weeks, my daughter asked me to drop this to three stars because of some design flaws -- see below).

What I like:

- For the price (currently free with plan), it's pretty good. It plays music, takes pictures, sends SMS and MMS messages, and can run a few apps.

- Texting is pretty good. It has a slider keyboard, and arranges text exchanges into conversations by sender.

- Connecting to a computer is well designed. When you connect to a PC through the micro-USB charging port, you get options to mount the phone as an external storage device (requires memory card), to sync music, or to use the PC for an internet connection. I haven't finished testing that last option, but really appreciate it --assuming it works, it means that we can get to the AT&T app store without buying a data plan.

- For a free phone, the operating system isn't bad. You can customize the home screen with "widgets" like android, so you have little windows on the home screen from different apps.

- It does have a basic web browser and some social media apps for things like facebook, and is eligible for AT&T's discount data plan, so if you want to buy data, it's functional. (At that point, though, I might look at the basic android phones -- their data plan is a little more expensive, but they're a lot more functional).

Cell Phones for Every Kind of User

Man in a suit checking his cell phone
The number of mobile phones available, and their capabilities, continues to grow. With so many options to choose from, you might find yourself wondering whatcell phone will best fit you. Probably the best way to decide on cell phones is to determine what kind of aphone user you are and what types of features you like to use or might use in the future. Here is a guide to choosing a cell phone according to your user type.

Cell Phones by User:

  1. PDA users: Users of PDA cell phones tend to use their phones to organize appointments, contacts and even do work away from the office. These cell phones typically include advanced Internet access and messaging options as well. If you're interested in transferring your day planner into electronic form, PDA cell phones may be for you.
  2. Text and messaging users: Most cell phones can send and receive texts and instant messages, but users who are serious about messaging may want a full QWERTY keyboard to make typing easier.Messaging phones tend to have other advanced controls for organizing and sending text, picture and video messages.
  3. Voice only users: Some users don't want all the bells and whistles. They just want a convenient, compact cell phone with good sound quality and long battery life. You can save lots of money every month by not having extras, such as texting or data plans. But make sure your cell phone is text capable. You never know when you might catch the bug!
  4. Music and video phone users: Music phones usually include a lot of memory to hold several hours of music and video. If you like to listen to music with your phone, find one with an easy user-interface and long battery life. Some decent headphones will complete your portable listening experience.
  5. Smartphone users: Available features vary between smartphones, but these phones basically act like portable computers. You can download programs, games, music and more to your cell phone over your wireless network and even connect to Wi-Fi hotspots. A large touch screen gives you great control to move between programs as well. Your smartphone may require a data plan to download apps and access the Web, though.

Customer Reviews
Needed a phone to replace our old GE. Does what it is supposed to do. The speaker phone works great and since my husband isn't the best when it comes to hearing, he hasn't complained yet when it rings.Easy to read.Has a lot of features. The answering machine is very clear and easy to understand. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend for someone who isn't into all the high tech.

I received this phone about 4 days ago and set them up yesterday...they are very nice for the price of 36.97 and they are replacing a phone that refused to hold a charge...didn't need the second phone but put it in the bedroom just for easy answering of all callers. The ring I chose is easy on the ears and both phones are easy to shut off...I am completely satisfied with the style and ease of use. Some reviews stated that the speaker was not clear I have not noted that...for heaven sake it is a phone not a stereo system that all the notes need to be true on....people need to rate the important things with the products and consider what your expectations are and what the products abilities are. I would buy this product again and suggest it to others!

How to Find Your Bluetooth Passkey

Bluetooth is a quick and easy way to wirelessly connect two devices. To pair two Bluetooth-compatible devices, you must have the pairing code, or passkey, for each device. Finding the passkey for your device takes only a few seconds.

Instructions

    • 1
Check your device for a sticker with the passkey printed on it. Typically headsets and car stereos have the passkey printed on a small sticker attached at the rear of the device.
    • 2
Look in your device's instruction book to see if the passkey is written inside. Each device has a unique passkey, so the passkey typically is printed on a sticker or inserted into the instruction book.
    • 3
Check the Bluetooth menu for your device. Cell phones and computers often have their passkeys within the Bluetooth menu. Look for the "Pairing Code" or "Passkey" option. Some laptop computers generate a random code each time you need it, so you may have an option for this task.
    • 4
Check online forums for your particular device to see whether someone has posted the passkey. A search for your device and the words "pairing code" might bring up information regarding the code or where you might find it.
    • 5
Call customer service for your device if you can't find the passkey. Customer service should be able to either tell you the passkey for your device or give you detailed instructions on how to find it.

Make Someone Feel Better Via Text Message (2)

Making Your Crush Feel Better

1   Don't exploit the opportunity. You can use this time to show someone you care about his or her feelings, and you genuinely want what's best. However, don't take it as an opportunity to ask someone out at a vulnerable moment when his or her judgment might be compromised. Try to act with the best intentions and seek to comfort this person above all else.

2    Be as supportive as you would be for a good friend. Listen carefully, take his or her side, and don't say things like "I told you so" or "Well, it's kind of your own fault." Keep the golden rule in mind - how would you want someone to treat you in this situation?
3Lift the mood with a subtle compliment. A nice compliment will make most people smile at least a little bit. Consider these tips:
Time it right. Don't awkwardly jam a compliment into the conversation when your crush is in the middle of explaining why he or she is upset. Instead, wait until the issue has died down a bit, or your crush seems tired of discussing it. This is the right moment to turn the conversation around and try to make it uplifting.
Don't be too obvious or crude. Now is probably not the time to focus a compliment on how great your crush's body is, or how much you want to date him or her. Instead, compliment something you admire about your crush's personality or skills. You'll be communicating that you care about the person, not just the physical traits. Something like "I really admire how you've handled this situation. You're an incredibly strong person" or "I can't understand how anyone would turn down someone as kind and beautiful as you" would be appropriate.
Plan to end the exchange shortly after the compliment. You don't want the conversation to stall or go downhill after your compliment, or the effect won't be as meaningful. Know when to bow out. After he or she responds to the compliment, start exiting.

4   Offer to continue providing support. Before you end the conversation, saying something like "Text me again if you still need to talk" or "Can I check up on you tomorrow?" sets you up to continue the interaction later. It also shows him or her that you're willing to follow-up and make sure the situation is resolved.

5   End with a cute send-off (optional). Instead of just saying "bye" at the end of the conversation, you can say something a little cuter. Try "I hope your dreams are sweeter than your day was!" or "Have an awesome afternoon. I can't wait to talk to you again later," or something along those lines, for a more creative sign-off that might make the other person smile a bit.

Make Someone Feel Better Via Text Message (1)

You may have noticed that cheering up your friend is a slightly harder task when you're not there to give your friend a hug or a pat on the back. However, there are still ways you can show that you care when you're not having a face-to-face conversation. Here's how to do it for a close friend, as well as someone you're interested in dating.

Steps

Making a Friend Feel Better

1  Ask the other person what's wrong, just as you would in person. When a friend goes to the effort to clarify that something is wrong in their text message, it usually means they want to talk. As such, showing concern lets your friend know that you care and that you're willing to engage in a morale boosting text session. That's always a start to cheering someone up.

2   Let your friend explain the dilemma, and be a good listener. Even with phone screens separating you, there are still ways to show that you're genuinely "listening" and receptive. While your friend tells the story, you can text little comments like, 'That's awful', or, 'I'm so sorry about that'. However, overdoing it can have the exact opposite effect, so make sure your words sound (and truly are) genuine. Space them out so that you're not crowding the text conversation.

3   Say the things that you know will be most comforting. All friends have slightly different reactions to words of commiseration or support, so make sure to phrase your responses with the particular person's known reactions in mind. Definitely avoid saying anything that smacks of "I warned you" or "I told you so".
Remember that miscommunication is especially easy when you can't hear the person's tone of voice.
Avoid trash talking another person if they are the reason your friend is upset, especially if the third party is another mutual friend. Fights can be resolved, but you can never take back words you say in the heat of the moment.

4   Let them know you wish you could be there in person to cheer them up, especially if your friend is someone you are interested in. Say things like "I wish I could be there to give you a hug" or simply, "I wish I could be with you right now."

5   Give your friend some suggested advice about the problem. Friends help each other out, and so, your willingness to aid will show your friend that you do care and want to help try and make things better. The great thing about text is that any advice given needs to be short and to-the-point, usually the best kind of advice!
Sometimes no advice is best. Sometimes just agreeing to listen and being there for your friend is the best answer. Don't give advice if it's not wanted or if you don't have all the facts before you.

6   Try to help your friend to look on the bright side. Taking a friend's mind off the negatives is helpful to making him or her feel better. You might like to do this with a short and obviously funny joke, a quick anecdote about something amusing, or even a funny photo or video you have to share. You might even make your own funny face, photograph it, and send that to cheer up your friend!

7    Use emoticons. Many phones come with emoticon menus that let you pick the one that is most appropriate for the moment. Generally, the standard emoticons are 'happy', 'very happy', 'angry', 'sad', 'excited', 'laughing', etc. If your phone doesn't have emoticons, you can use smilies. The standard smile is ':)', but, like emoticons, smilies cover a broad range of emotions. Using them in text messages is cute, fun, and helps to better convey your feelings, which can sometimes be difficult in a texting medium.

8    Use symbols like '<3'. This particular symbol depicts a sideways heart and all heart symbols are cute, clever, and very useful in showing your affection and support. Another good one is 'XOXO'. And don't forget the value of simply saying "hugs". That can convey more than many other words could ever do.

9    Know when to end the texting. If your friend seems incredibly upset, end the texting. Either arrange to catch up face-to-face with your friend as soon as possible or suggest that you talk on the phone or Skype rather than text. Alternatively, you may sense that your friend is getting distracted and wants some time out from thinking about their problems, and this could be a good time to stop texting. And if all you get back from your friend are lots of smiles and hugs, you've done your job of cheering them up and you can tell them you'll catch them later.

to be continued...

How to Become a Home Call Center Agent

Become a Home Call Center Agent
Call center work is highly valued in many of today’s major service industries. In financial centers, call center workers help customers handle their financial products and deal with questions about banking policy. In medical groups, they help process insurance claims and inform patients on the status of a claim. Retail call center agents may field calls about a product, handle complaints, or talk to customers about payment.
There is generally no formal education required to become a home call center agent, as most of the skills a call center workers uses are things that he or she learns on the job. An independent contractor working as a call center agent combines these skills with some business knowledge to develop a client base that will provide them with ongoing work.
Steps
1
Set up reliable telecommunication services. As an independent contractor, you will need telephone and Internet service to communicate with potential clients about assignments, conduct telephone interviews and, assuming you build a client base, communicate with your clients’ customers.
Sign up with a telecommunications provider that offers both land line long distance and high speed Internet for package rates that could save you some money.
Make sure your work space is free of distractions. A quiet, professional work space is essential to become a home call center agent.
2
Look for call center work on job search engines. Be sure to focus on looking for contracts that include the word “telecommuting,” “work from home” and “freelance.”
3
Review any contract that a potential client offers you to be sure it spells out all the terms of work, including task description, rate of pay, invoicing procedures, and payment timetable.
4
Complete the necessary paperwork. Paperwork requirements vary from country to country, but, for instance, in the United States, independent contractors must supply clients to whom they contract a completed IRS W-9 Tax ID form. At the end of the tax year, U.S. independent contractors receive an IRS 1099-MISC form that documents the income earned for tax reporting purposes.
5
Manage your client base. Once you’ve developed a client base, pay careful attention to record keeping and time management. Use productivity software and other tools to securely maintain client records, keep track of billable hours or units, fulfill your contractual obligations to your clients, and invoice and track accounts receivables.

How to Use My Call Blocking With Sage Telecom

Using Sage Telecom's call blocking feature, you can block specific numbers to keep annoying callers and telemarketers away. Sage Communications, created in 1998, offers residential and business telephone service in 12 states. You can enable call blocking on your phone by spending two or three minutes programming your service.
Instructions
1
Call Sage Telecom's customer service department at 1-888-449-4940 and ask a customer service representative whether you have the call blocking feature included on your phone plan. If you do not, tell the representative that you want to add call blocking to your phone service; a monthly fee is added to your next phone bill.
2
To block the last incoming phone number from ringing through to your phone, pick up your receiver and hit "#." Wait for three tones to play, then dial "01#" and hang up. Anyone using that blocked phone line to dial your Sage Telecom number will hear a message notifying him that calls from his number are not permitted at this time.

3
Alternatively, pick up your receiver, dial "*60" and listen for the prompts. Press "2" to create a blocked number list, then enter a phone number--including the area code--that you want to block. Press "#" and listen for the prompt to enter the next number that you want to block. Continue this process until you have blocked all the desired numbers, up to a maximum of 10. Listen carefully to the prompts; Sage Telecom's phone blocking method varies from state to state.

Illinois Cochlear Implant Chapter

Using a cell phone can be challenging for cochlear implant users. Cell Phones transmit and receive speech and data using radio signals. This transmission combined by the electromagnetic interference of the phone itself, cause varying degrees of interference (buzzing) when we hold the phone up to our processors.

Hearing Aid Compatibility Ratings

The FCC requires vendors to identify phones in their line up that exhibit less interference to hearing aids and cochlear implant processors. A phone with acceptable interference is labeled M3. If you wish to use your phone normally without a T-Coil, buy a phone rated M3. But if you wish to use your phone with your processor set on T-Coil and neck loop, look for a phone rated T3 or even better T4. You can search for phones here www.phonescoop.com. When you do a search here, you need to select "Show All Options" so the Hearing Aid Compatibility options display.

The FCC does not allow the T rating to exceed the M rating. That means a phone rated M3/T3 might actually be M3/T4, but the manufacturer is not allowed to tell you when this is the case. Always try them out in the store. You'll discover some work better than most.

Handsfree

If you want a hands free method for your cell phone, Cell Phone Neckloop is the simplest solution. They call it a cell phone neck loop because it includes a microphone. The neck loop plugs into your phone's headset jack. Most phones have a 3.5mm jack although some have a 2.5mm jack. You may need to use a converter jack. The ClearSounds product comes with that.

You can also get a Bluetooth Cell Phone Neckloop. This neck loop doesn't need to be plugged into the phone as it communicates using Bluethooth. If your phone's headset jack is square, this is your only handsfree option.

You might be tempted to just plug the audio cable that came with your processor into your phone. This is not likely to work. You'll hear your caller, but your caller will not hear you. Why? Because your audio cable doesn't have a microphone. The iPhone4 is an exception.

Depending on how your processor is programmed, you might not hear your voice when you speak. Your audiologist sets how much sound should come from the t-coil and how much from your microphone.

If you hear buzzing when using a t-coil, lower your sensitivity if you can. You may have to ask your audiologist to make this adjustment for you.

How to Get Free Money on My Telecom Cell Phone

telecom cell phone

In New Zealand, telecom is one of a few national cell phone service providers. The Wellington and Auckland based company runs a high-speed network in addition to its regular service, the XT Network. To get free credit on your pre-paid Telecom cell phone, there are several ways, including taking advantage of promotions and offers run by the company. This is a frugal way to maximize value you can get from your cell phone.

Instructions
1
Add between $20 and $60 of credit to your Telecom XT cell phone at a time. The higher amount you pay, the greater amount of free credit you will receive. For example, if you add $40 to your Telecom XT cell phone you will receive $10 free credit with 25 percent of the addition. But add $60 and you will receive $20 free credit with 33 percent of your $60. This offer is only available to "One Rate Prepaid" customers on the Telecom XT network.
2
Register your existing prepaid Telecom cell phone online. Telecom offers $10 free credit to customers who choose to register their cell phone number and contact information via the company's website. This offer is available only once for each cell phone. Once your phone is registered, Telecom will send you a text message containing a voucher number. Write the number down, dial "*333" and press 1, then 1 again. Enter the voucher number when prompted.

3
Switch your iPhone 3, 3G or 4 from Vodafone New Zealand to Telecom XT and sign up for a 24 month or longer One Rate 180 plan. Telecom will apply $600 free credit to your account and double the amount of free minutes available on your plan for two years. The offer is not available online, so you will have to visit a Telecom store or call 800-662-435.
