The ideas showed in the article published in the Wall Street Journal on June
19, 2012, gave the idea to summarize the perspective 4g phones trends in 2012.
The authors have stated the positions of Google and Apple as the main rivals at
this moment. The idea is proved by recent sales data of these giants.
1) As for the WSJ data, the current share of Apple and Google on the
global smartphone market is about 80 percent.
2) According to the statistics of 2012, about 490 million smartphones were
sold of over 1.4 billion phones sold this year. The projected figure for
smartphones for the next 5 years is about 1 billion.
3) The authors in the WSJ also think that Google’s measures on the market are
underestimated by many other cell phone manufacturers. They say Google
made 59 percent of smartphone shipments worldwide. That’s about 23
percentage point increase as compared with the previous year data.
The idea is that after acquisition of Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. for the
sum of $12.5 billion, Google will certainly pay attention to hardware issues and
promotion of Android gadgets.
4) As people who are familiar to the matter say that Google has accelerated
plans to launch alternative solution to Siri, Apple’s virtual
assistant, which gives the opportunity to search the info in another way than
search box by Google.
5) Google is constantly improving not only services, but it also
launches its own devices. E.g., a new inexpensive Android
tablet is expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks.
As for our point of view about 4g phones trends in 2012, you cannot dismiss
the Samsung’s increased share on the smartphone market, especially with its
recent flagship phones – Galaxy Note, Galaxy S2 or Galaxy S3. Samsung should be
considered as one of the most powerful rivals to Apple and Google.
